Information about Economics

A degree in economics yields one of the highest earnings of any bachelor’s degree a student can earn.”

      -U.S. Department of Labor

Whether you are a student, consumer, employee or future executive, you are an integral part of what we call the economy. It is, nowadays, nearly impossible to pick up a newspaper, watch the nightly news or listen to a political debate without hearing about economic conditions and the impact they are expected to have on our daily lives.

How easily will you be able to find a job upon your graduation from college?  Is now the best time to purchase a new house or a new car or would it be better to wait – in case interest rates drop in the near future?  What about all of that money you plan to make in the stock market?  When should you buy?  When should you sell?  What do you think Alan Greenspan and the Federal Reserve System will choose to do at the next Federal Open Market Committee meeting?  Will Chairman Greenspan choose to push interest rates up?  How will the market react?  What about gas prices in the near future?  Can we expect them to be high or low?  Wouldn’t it be great if you could answer all of these questions yourself ahead of time?  Imagine all of the terrific decisions you would be able to make and how much more satisfaction you would get out of your time, your wealth and your life!  A degree in economics will provide you with the tools to do just that.  By studying economics, you will develop an in-depth understanding of the economy that will prove to be an invaluable, life long tool. The economy is all around you – you cannot get away from it.  Why not then learn to appreciate it so you can make it work for you?

Along with providing you with knowledge that will enrich your everyday lives, the economics program at Seton Hall University will also help you work toward achieving maximum career potential, a strong factor in choosing a major concentration.  By selecting economics as your field of study,

You will develop a thorough understanding of all facets of economics: the relationships between businesses, households and government, and the principles governing those relationships.

You will develop quantitative and analytical skills of inquiry that are needed for the development of a career in business, government, education and law.   You will learn how to approach problem solving systematically and most importantly you will learn how to think.

You will be prepared for graduate studies in economics (M.A., Ph.D.), law (J.D.), business (M.B.A.), public administration and policy (M.P.A.), and degrees in planning and policy.
